5 TIPS WHEN CHOOSING A TRAVEL BASEBALL PROGRAM
Guys, it’s tough. I mean, really tough, to find somewhere your kids will develop, succeed AND have fun. With that, I wanted to try and help educate or at the very least provide my opinion on what you should be looking for in a baseball instructor and/or coach. I believe you will see some value in this and I just want this beautiful game of baseball to be loved by everyone the same way I loved it as a kid.
LOSING $1 MILLION DOLLARS AND STILL PROFITING
Who wants to be a millionaire? Corny, show reference…well, yeah. But for real, who does? I see the hand up. I get it. Did you ever imagine yourself becoming a millionaire at 17 years old? Me either, but I could have been. The Kansas City Royals offered me $1,500,000 as a 17 year old kid, from Bethany, CT in the 7th round of the 2008 MLB Baseball Draft. Guess what? I said, “No.”
I believe as coaches we invest our efforts in developing athletes fundamentally and mentally. Once they get to High School, the exposure will begin. They become a "brand" of themselves. Aiming to "win" over scouts and college recruiters/coaches. However, do not blame the process, it is what it is, that's why at any major showcase
ATHLETES ARE ENTREPRENEURS. PERIOD.
I believe this, I really do. Listen, you can try to convince me we belong in the corporate world and maybe you can convince some, but not me. Safety, pensions, insurance, those aren’t any words any athlete has ever heard before and let me give you context. There isn’t any safety when you enter in the world of sports, what safety?! I mean really? I was nine years old I broke my wrist and cracked a growth plate in my throwing elbow, all from baseball — a non contact sport!
THE TAKE AWAY
How do I perform up to expectations? It’s baseball, a job now — I should be lucky, but there was more to it for me. I was struggling with everything off the field and on the field all at once. These are the obstacles the general public doesn’t see, doesn’t understand and to a certain degree find it hard to relate to.
